On A Night Like This

Maybe I should title this post "Wow wow wow wow!!!" I just saw Kylie Minogue live for the first time. She's been performing for over 20 years, but tonight she began her first North American tour. Just hours ago, she hit the stage for opening night at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, California. I had wondered for so long if this day would ever come. It's unbelievable that it finally did!

I staked out a prime spot on the general admission floor area and chatted up a few new friends. I was up close and personal as "Minnie" performed most of her hits, including several songs from her latest album, X.

But the biggest surprise was the inclusion of a brand new song, "Better Than Today." Kylie mentioned that she was doing something for the first time, introducing a song that will be included on her upcoming album!! Such a catchy, cute number too. But you can judge for yourself. Thanks to 12345Speakerphone for posting this.

Check out Kylie's Tour Blog for inside info and her thoughts on the whole experience. Next stop for me: the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday! More Minogue madness! I can't wait!

Coug-ratulations Courteney Cox...

...on a hilarious new show!! (Okay, that heading was so cheesy I should set it out to catch mice!) Here are my first thoughts on ABC's new Wednesday night comedies.

Modern Family: moderately amusing. There were a few laughs, but for the most part, it left me wanting more. I really want to like this show. They sucked me in with the following lines of dialogue in their promos:

Gay #1: "Why is our daughter dressed like Donna Summer?"

Gay #2: "Clearly she is Diana Ross from the RCA years!"

Only a true diva fanatic can appreciate that part of the 1980s that brought us such Miss Ross gems as "Mirror, Mirror," "Muscles," "Pieces of Ice," and the Ross/Barry Gibb/Michael Jackson collaboration "Eaten Alive."

The first episode of "Family" contained no such gems. Guess I'll have to wait for the episode with the bewigged adopted baby.

Cougartown, on the other hand, was a riot! Ten times better! Granted, I may be a bit biased. I spent 10 years invested in the goings-on of Courteney Cox & crew on Friends. But Cougartown is a refreshing adult comedy!

So much is sanitized these days that I was giddy with glee at the dirtiness "CT" got away with! As Jules, Courteney is jumping back into dating/preying on younger men. One of the first episode's delights was the intimate moment our protagonist gets caught in, and the fruit she is subsequently forbidden from eating!

It seems our gal Jules is a successful real estate agent. The sexy photo on her signs inspires the lust of a neighborhood tween boy. I'm assuming she's successful because, as a sign maker, I know those signs would've cost a pretty penny. They're larger than average size, with a full-color photo, and made of material strong enough not to bend when being used to beat someone over the head!

I say it was a slam-dunk for Court and Cougartown on premiere night. Let's hope they keep it up!!

Am I a Hoarder?

I love the A&E show Hoarders! I have always been a bit of a packrat. I'm not sure if I enjoy Hoarders so much because I relate to the people or because I can watch it and think, "At least I'm not that bad!"

I'm a TV junkie, and as VHS video tapes got cheaper, my collection grew. I didn't have to record over things! I could save them for a rainy day!

The digital age that we now live in is my rainy day. Do I really want to convert those hundreds of tapes to mpeg or avi format? (Incidentally, if anyone knows the best digital video format for achieving small file size with decent quality, let me know! I use both PC & Mac, but I'll save that story for another time.)

Square footage is a hoarder's (or packrat's) worst enemy. The more space you have, the more crap you can amass! I can certainly attest to that. My current home is fairly large, but if/when I move to LA, I'm sure I will have a much smaller living space.

Soon, I will start the journey down the endless miles of video tape. "Oh I would watch 500 miles and I would watch 500 more..." If I can downsize, I'll be ready to move when the opportunity arises. Soon. I'm off work next week...

Andy Rooney can relate:

Doing It with Margaret & Luna & Ginsburg!

Recently (August 20 to be exact), I was "Doing It with Margaret Cho," as well as Ian Harvie, Selene Luna and Nadya Ginsburg. Margaret had no voice at all and was under strict doctor's orders not to speak, so her friends and fellow performers lent her their voices. They read her material, even doing the voices of her mom and Cyndi Lauper, while Margaret pantomimed. Hilarious!

You may know Luna & Ginsburg from their Madonna & Lourdes YouTube video. They even did a take on it at the show last Thursday. Selene & Nadya were super sweet, posing for this shot with me after the show.

They also suggested I take in Jackie Beat's "Better Than Nothing?" show, which I did the following night. Jackie, Nadya & Selene star in "Cher & Chaz," exec-produced by Roseanne Barr! Check out episodes 1 and 2 below. I love Selene so much! You will sh!t when you see her!

"Available at Target!" I love it! Nadya's Cher voice is just as great as her Madonna voice! Of course, they address Chastity's transition to Chaz in episode 2:

Kathy Griffin Roasts Joan Rivers!

Two weeks ago, I had a gay ol' time at the Kathy Griffin concert in Fresno. She mentioned that the following night, she would be hosting the Joan Rivers Roast. In old school comic style, a roast is when a performer is really raked over the coals. The roasters say all the things commentators normally stop shy of. Oh yes... they go there!

I was maybe 11 or 12 years old when I got Joan's LP "What Becomes a Semi-Legend Most?" Some of the jokes went over my head, as I was a sheltered young boy growing up in Visalia, CA. But this record, along with Bette Midler's "Mud Will Be Flung Tonight!" shaped my burgeoning comic psyche. It's a damn funny album!

Back in the day, what happened at a roast stayed at the roast. But fortunately, for us, that's no longer the case! The Joan Rivers Roast airs tomorrow night on Comedy Central... uncensored! Check out this preview:

Bette Midler on Today & Regis!

Man, I have been a slacking blogger lately! But hey, this is great--a quick interview with Miss M on the Today Show:

And check out Regis & Kelly this morning as the Divine one co-hosts! I'm assuming she's filling in for Kelly, not Regis. Should be interesting!!

It was so great to see The Showgirl Must Go On this past May in Las Vegas (8th row!) and I hope to see her again soon! If you get a chance, go!! Such a spectacle!

Big Brother 11 Cast Revealed!

This morning, CBS' Early Show revealed the cast of Big Brother 11, premiering July 9 on CBS! Pix and bios are posted on the CBS site.

There's always at least one gay person, and this year it's Kevin. A graphic designer from Chula Vista, CA, Kevin grew up Jehovah's Witness but was excommunicated at the age of 21. He's now 29, calls himself "blackanese" (I love it!) and says he can get bitchy. Gurrl, who can't?

Chima, is a journalist from West Hollywood, so I'm pegging her as the faghag. This 32-year-old single gal is "looking for a man who is tall, considerate and has a great sense of humor." Surely she's surrounded by plenty of guys like that, living in WeHo, but Margaret Cho would say, "Girl, you better be more specific!"

CBS has only announced 12 houseguests so far, and there's a mystery HG to be announced July 7. Speculation is that there may be as many as 14 prisoners (uh... I mean... players) in the house. For ALL the latest on Big Brother, check out BBDish. This girl is on top of it! Seriously!

Ross Tours Big Brother House

Wow! Ross (The Intern) Matthews is a bigger Big Brother fan than me! And he gets to tour the Big Brother house. Not just that, but he and his studio, across the street from the BB house, will be the first stop after eviction. Ross' show will officially take the place of House Calls, the now-defunct internet show where evictees would field questions from hosts and viewers.

Michael Jackson: 1958-2009

James Dean
Marilyn Monroe
Elvis Presley
Princess Diana
Laura Branigan
Anna Nicole Smith
Heath Ledger
Farrah Fawcett
Michael Jackson

All gone too soon. I'm still in shock. Just the other day, I was thinking how great it would be to see one of Michael Jackson's upcoming "comeback" concerts in London. Experiencing great entertainers in all their glory, doing what they do best and what they are so loved for is so invigorating for me. Being part of something so magical can really make you feel alive.

I wonder what will become of the children of "the King of Pop," a man so childlike himself. Regardless of all the scandal that tarnished his name in later years, Michael Jackson's contribution to 20th century music and pop culture, and his ability to entertain are undeniable.

Diana Ross was a very special friend of Michael's. Check out this video from Diana's 1981 television special where Michael joins her onstage for Upside Down.

Chastity Bono becoming a man?!

OMG... who knew? Chastity Bono, "Chaz" to family and friends, began the process of gender reassignment earlier this year, according to the Associated Press. If you've seen any of the old Sonny & Cher shows, surely you remember their little blond offspring who appeared at the end of the episodes, often singing along to "I Got You Babe."

Female to male transitioning is much less publicized, or so it seems to me, than male to female. It is probably more misunderstood as well. Aside from Thomas, "the pregnant man" who was featured/sensationalized by Oprah and Barbara Walters, who can you name?  Check out trans comedian Ian Harvie for some witty insight on the topic!

Meet In The Middle

On May 30, celebrities and civilians alike converged upon Fresno, CA for Meet In The Middle.  It was a protest of the California Supreme Court's decision to uphold Prop 8, prohibiting same sex couples from marrying. Unfortunately, I was in Las Vegas seeing Fleetwood Mac and Bette Midler, so I was unable to attend.

Wouldn't you know, I missed seeing my old pal T.R. Knight from Grey's Anatomy.  T.R. and I go way back!  (I met him at the GLAAD Awards, which will be televised soon on LOGO.)  T.R. joined Eric McCormack, Charlize Theron, Dustin Lance Black and many others in the largest gay rights gathering Fresno has ever seen.  We've got a long way to go, but hopefully soon California will join the 6 other states that have already come to their senses and legalized gay marriage.

Adam On Top!

...and Kris is excited for Adam's outfit!  This clip is great, especially at about 1:17.

Am I the only one who foresees an adult-themed video with Kris Allen & Adam Lambert look-alikes in the near future?  What might they call it?  Hmm...

Prop 8: The Fight Goes On!

Yesterday, the California Supreme Court upheld Prop 8. Boo! There were protests all across the state, and of course the one in West Hollywood was massive.

Many thanks to our fabulous, famous fruit-flies Kathy Griffin, Deborah Gibson, Kelly Osbourne and especially Drew Barrymore, who spoke at the WeHo rally.  And, by the way, WTF stands for "When They Fight" in this instance.

On a happier note, the new season of Kathy's My Life On The D-List premieres Monday night. Kathy will be cavorting in Las Vegas with Bette Midler, which, incidentally, I will be doing the night before! It's a double-header for me, as I will be catching Fleetwood Mac's Unleashed: The Hits Tour at MGM Grand Saturday night, followed by Bette's The Showgirl Must Go On at Caesar's Palace Sunday night. Four-day weekend, here I come! Don't be jealous! (Or do, I don't mind!)

Kylie talks up US Tour

I'm so stoked that Kylie Minogue is FINALLY coming to the US for a few concerts this fall! Thanks to Muzophile for the heads up on that! Hey, let me know if you're going to any of the shows, especially the LA or SF shows. I love to meet & chat with other fans.

Kylie stopped by the Today Show Thursday to talk about her long-awaited US Tour. Kathie Lee usually doesn't bug me this much, but... UGH! Try to ignore her and check out Kylie!

Kylie: USA Tour 2009!!

I haven't been this excited about something in a long time! Our little "Min," aka Kylie Minogue, is FINALLY touring the States this fall. 21 years in the music biz, and this is her first foray into concerts here! I can't wait! I already have my tickets for opening night in Oakland (Sept. 30) as well as the Hollywood Bowl (Oct. 4).

This one is not to be missed, folks!! I wonder if the show will be similar to last year's "X 2008" tour or completely different. Any thoughts?

Dolly on The Today Show

OK, no more slacking on the blogs for me.  Just gonna get it out there for your enjoyment!

Dolly Parton wrote all the music for the new Broadway show 9 to 5.  I caught it twice at the Ahmanson Theatre in LA last October and it was phenomenal!  I hope I can make it to NY to see it on Broadway.  (I've never been to NY, so I've never seen anything on Broadway!)

Dolly sat down for a chat with Matt Lauer yesterday morning on The Today Show.  She's as cute as always.  Check it out!

Timberlake on Jimmy Fallon

Anyone who knows me knows that my DVR is my best friend, or at least ONE OF my best friends! I just watched the debut of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake had me in stitches. SNL's "Barry Gibb Talk Show" with Jimmy and JT was crazy funny, and of course they decided to relive some of the hilarity on Jimmy's show. Justin's John Mayer and Michael McDonald impressions are not to be missed! Check it out here:

And Justin, if you're reading this, thanks for turning Madonna out on Hard Candy. 4 Minutes and Dance 2Night (my personal fave) are the highlights of her album. Ya ain't too hard to look at either!

Idol Thoughts (Go Jesse Go!)

Okay, so Fox is using its juggernaut, American Idol, for all it's worth, stretching out the voting and the road to Top 12 as much as possible. This year, we got three weeks of Top 36 performances, topped off by tonight's wild card showdown featuring second chances for 8 hopefuls.

Idol likes to keep things equal, usually with 6 guys and 6 girls in the Top 12. So far, we have 6 guys and 3 girls. The wild card show features 4 guys and 4 girls. (Hmm... wonder how that happened!) In order for us to have an "equal" Top 12, the judges would need to select 3 girls and no guys.

My choices for the wild cards would be Jasmine Murray, Megan Joy Corkrey and, my personal fave, Jesse Langseth. Sure, she's the sister of singer Jonny Lang, so people think she may have gotten a little extra consideration. If that were the case, wouldn't David Osmond still be on the show? Whatever the case, Jesse's got an awesome, very distinctive voice, and "Bette Davis Eyes" was perfect for her! It's the only Top 36 performance I've bought on iTunes (so far).

One thing that's always bugged me is that Fox makes such a big deal out of the Top 12, but it's only the Top 10 that go on tour when the show is over. Can anyone make sense of that?

Anyway, tune in tonight to see how they round out the Top 12. And go here for a complete breakdown of last night's show!

This Is The Main Event! Are You Ready?

This spring, it's all about RuPaul! The bitch is back, and she's letting you have it!

If you haven't been watching RuPaul's Drag Race, which is airing on LOGO and VH1, you need to! It's crazy fun! You can catch up on missed episodes, bonus footage and all the dragalicious drama at RuPaulsDragRace.com.

What's more, Ru's new CD "Champion" dropped this week! It features the first single "Cover Girl," and the theme from "Drag Race." The opening track is "The Main Event." No, it's not the Streisand disco song, but it's a great high energy track! Ru even pays homage to Barbra by including her classic movie poster on her blog. Check it out!

Dancing Circles in the Sand

First came the NutriSystem endorsement. Now she's set to take a turn on Dancing With The Stars. It seems that Belinda Carlisle is really following in the footsteps of Marie Osmond. Let's hope the Go-Go's lead singer doesn't go "Head Over Heels" and fall on her ass like Donny's sister did! Although Da Brat, who enjoyed mocking Belinda's bandmate Jane Wiedlin on VH1's The Surreal Life, would surely get a kick out of a topsy-turvy Carlisle!

Besides Belinda, this season's Dancing contestants include Jewel and her husband Ty Murray, computer guru Steve Wozniak (Kathy Griffin's ex), not-so-Complicated Denise Richards, and Sex and the City nude hottie Gilles Marini. Songstress Julianne Hough, a Dancing regular, will be paired with her real-life boyfriend, country singer Chuck Wicks. See the complete list here.

Most likely to have a wardrobe malfunction: rapper Lil Kim. But when you start out wearing pasties, there's not much left to come off! One of my absolute favorite moments in pop culture in my lifetime was seeing Diana Ross jiggle Kim's not-so-Lil mammary on the MTV Awards!

Do you know your logos?

Wanna test yourself? Take this quiz and try to identify the correct company logos! It's quick and fun. We see these all the time, but often don't pay too much attention.

I scored 19 out of 20. It might help that I have worked in the sign business for over ten years! Happy Friday, and have fun with the quiz!

RuPaul's Drag Race

Reality TV takes on a whole new layer of artifice when RuPaul's Drag Race premieres tonight on LOGO. Nine drag queens compete to be crowned fiercest diva of them all. And who else could host such an extravaganza but Supermodel of t he World, RuPaul?

The contestants are judged on Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve & Talent, the acronym for which spells... well, I won't say it here! I expect to see more catfights among the "girls" here than anything the women on The Bachelor could imagine!

Ooh baby, do you know what that's worth?

Belinda Carlisle has joined Marie Osmond in touting NutriSystem. I love that they call her "International Pop Singer" Belinda Carlisle. I guess being international makes her more valuable as a spokesperson.

The NutriSystem website proclaims "Belinda has lost 20 lbs.* (*Results not typical.)" What is typical? 5 lbs?

Margaret Cho FINGERBANGS LA!

Tomorrow night, January 27, it's Margaret's musical extravaganza Fingerbang! Margaret likens it to Hee-Haw, but less country and less corny.

Our gal has gotten "guitarded" (her word, not mine) and has been singing songs such as "Eat Me Out" (on the Beautiful tour) and a Repeal Prop 8 ditty.

She'll be joined by Jill Sobule (she was kissing girls in the '90s, long before Katy Perry) as well as "Sensuous Woman" costars Liam Sullivan, Ian Harvie, Kurt Hall and Selene Luna.

Check Margaret's site for info. Of course I'll be there and I'll report back on the festivities. I can't wait!!

Margaret Cho on The Doctors Today!

Hey, don't miss Margaret co-hosting the syndicated show The Doctors today. It's supposed to be their vagina episode. Sounds awesome to me!

If you're in LA, hit up The Ian Harvie Show tonight. Selene Luna and a "surprise guest" are appearing. Go here and vote for Ian Harvie to be on LOGO's Big Gay Sketch Show. You can vote once every 24 hours!)

Madonna and "Madonna" Videos

Check out Madonna in this behind-the-scenes video from her Louis Vuitton shoot with Marc Jacobs. About halfway through the video, that fuzzy ensemble pops up. You know, the one she worked on the red carpet a while back. At least no one can say Madge isn't green!

And, for a great laugh, don't miss this hilarious video. The fabulous Selene Luna rocks as the hairrific Lourdes and Nadya Ginsburg nails Madonna's accent. She kills it! Seriously. Watch. Now!
